About Summerland Fall Fair
In 1902 Lord Shaughnessy, a man of vision, purchased a 4000 acre cattle ranch on which he founded Summerland. He formed the Summerland Development Company, created irrigation systems and sold orchard land. He promoted the orchard growing potential through CPR executives, sought out and received Canadian Government funding of seventy five dollars. With this backing the first Summerland Apple Fair began in 1909 showcasing the fruit potential and land development in the area. As a result the community of Summerland grew along with a supporting fruit industry. |
Today the Fair continues to encourage, educate and exhibit its agricultural roots and future agricultural directions. Throughout the century the Fair has displayed many faces and worked out of varied facilities as it grew with our community. Totally run by volunteers, the annual event is made possible with support from the local and provincial governments, the local business community and many service organizations and clubs. The dedication of the people of Summerland has carried the Fair into the next century. |
